Physics

The Department of Physics started functioning with the initiation of the Pre-degree programme in 1981 and became a full-fledged department with the introduction of B.Sc. Physics in 1999.

M.Sc. in Physics was started in 2013. The department has a departmental library with sufficient books, a computer lab, a general lab, and a well-equipped electronics lab. The faculty members in the department are life members of the Indian Association of Physics Teachers. The department conducts a power Quiz in co-operation with Kerala Electricity Board.

ICT Classrooms

The ICT classrooms in the Department of Physics offer transformative benefits, enhancing the learning experience for students. These classrooms facilitate interactive teaching, engaging students in dynamic simulations, virtual experiments, and real-time data analysis. The integration of Information and Communication Technologies enables personalized learning, encouraging active participation and in-depth understanding of complex physics concepts. The ICT classrooms not only enrich classroom lectures but also prepare students for research, equipping them with essential digital skills and enhancing their overall academic performance.


UG Physics Laboratory

Undergraduate students benefit from well-maintained facilities in the Physics Core Lab, Electronics Lab, and Computer Lab. These meticulously equipped spaces offer students hands-on experience and practical learning opportunities. In the Physics Core Lab, they explore fundamental concepts through experiments, while the Electronics Lab provides a platform for understanding electronic circuits and devices. Additionally, the Computer Lab enhances their computational skills, enabling them to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios.


PG Physics Laboratroy

The Post Graduate department boasts state-of-the-art infrastructural facilities, featuring well-equipped laboratories with modern instruments, all housed in centralized air-conditioned labs. These facilities provide ample space for teacher demonstrations, student laboratory activities, and secure storage. The lab is divided into three major sections: one for general experiments, another for electronics experiments, and a third dedicated to computer programming experiments. Each section is meticulously furnished and equipped with internet facilities, ensuring a conducive environment for comprehensive academic and research activities.

Activities

E-Waste Collection Campaign

An E-Waste Collection Campaign was organized to raise awareness about the importance of recycling electronic waste. The initiative encouraged students and the community to dispose of old and unused electronic devices responsibly, promoting environmental sustainability and reducing the harmful impact of e-waste on the environment.

Certificate Course on Robotics and AI

A Certificate Course on Robotics and AI was organized to provide students with foundational knowledge and practical skills in the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence. The course covered key concepts, technologies, and applications in these cutting-edge areas, preparing students for future career opportunities in robotics, automation, and AI.

Talk on Data Science, AI, and Medical Coding

A talk on ‘Data Science & AI and Medical Coding’ was organized by Avodha Edutech for science stream students. The main objective of the program was to empower students with knowledge about various career opportunities in these rapidly growing fields, helping them explore potential pathways in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Medical Coding.

Physics Lab Open Day for School Students

On October 29, 2024, the Physics lab was opened for school students, offering them a unique opportunity to explore physics through hands-on activities. The event allowed students to engage with scientific concepts in an interactive and practical way, fostering curiosity and a deeper understanding of physics.

Inter-School Still Model Making Competition

The Department of Physics organized an Inter-School Still Model Making Competition, where students from various schools participated enthusiastically. The competition encouraged creativity and scientific thinking, with participants showcasing models related to physics concepts. Winners were awarded cash prizes for their innovative and well-crafted models, recognizing their talent and hard work.

Hands-on Training in Robotics & AI

On October 19, 2024, Radiant Technologies conducted a hands-on training session on Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. The workshop provided practical experience and valuable insights into the latest advancements in these fields.

Seminar on “Empowering Sustainability”

On October 9, 2024, a seminar on “Empowering Sustainability: A Pathway to Effective Waste Management” was held, featuring Mr. Subin Baby, District Manager of Clean Kerala Company Ltd., as the resource person. The session focused on domain-related activities and strategies for sustainable waste management.

World Space Week: ISRO Visit

As part of World Space Week, 24 students and 4 teachers visited ISRO on October 8, 2024. The visit aimed to inspire students by showcasing the work and dedication behind the nation’s space missions.

Space on Wheels: Mobile Exhibition by ISRO

In collaboration with ISRO, the “Space on Wheels” mobile exhibition was held to promote awareness of space science among students. The exhibition featured interactive displays, models, and exhibits showcasing the latest advancements in space technology, satellite missions, and India’s space achievements. It aimed to inspire students to explore the field of space science and technology while providing them with hands-on learning experiences. The initiative helped foster curiosity and understanding of the significance of space exploration in everyday life.

National Space Week Celebrations: Engaging Competitions and Events

From August 6th to 9th, 2024, National Space Week was celebrated with a series of exciting events to engage students in space science and creativity. The week featured a Quiz Competition, Painting Competition, Seminar, Essay Writing Competition, and a Science Fiction Story Writing Competition, all focused on promoting interest in space exploration. These activities encouraged students to explore space-related topics through various forms of expression, enhancing their knowledge and imagination about the universe.

Student as Teacher: General Physics Demonstrations

On July 19, 2024, II-year M.Sc. Physics students conducted general physics experiments for I-year M.Sc. students as part of the “Student as a Teacher” program, promoting experiential learning.

Participative Learning

On July 8, 2024, a Project Presentation event was held to familiarize students with current research areas in Physics and enhance their presentation skills, fostering participative learning.

Farewell meeting

A farewell meeting was held on March 27, 2024, in the first-year B.Sc. classroom to bid adieu to our retiring faculty and esteemed Head of the Department, Ms. Shyny K Ittiachan. This heartfelt gathering served as a tribute to her dedicated service and invaluable contributions to the department. Colleagues and students alike came together to express their gratitude and appreciation for her guidance, mentorship, and leadership over the years. Fond memories were shared, and well wishes extended for her future endeavors. The event was a poignant reflection of the deep respect and admiration held for Ms. Shyny K Ittiachan, marking the end of an era while also celebrating her legacy within the department.

“Sky Watch” program

On February 22, 2024, the department hosted a captivating “Sky Watch” program led by Dr. N Shaji from Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam. Attendees explored the celestial realm, marveling at the night sky’s beauty and deepening their understanding of astronomical phenomena, reaffirming the department’s commitment to scientific curiosity and appreciation for nature.

Morning Star Lecture Series

On February 22, 2024, the department hosted the ‘Morning Star Lecture Series’ on “Super Capacitors for Energy Storage,” featuring Dr. Asha A.S. from Cochin University of Science & Technology. Dr. Asha expertly covered the necessity, applications, and construction of supercapacitors. The event was introduced by Dr. Rintu Mary Sebastian and welcomed by Ms. Atisha Kujur. Ms. Anupama concluded with gratitude to Dr. Asha, highlighting our commitment to academic excellence and knowledge dissemination.

National Science Day

In commemoration of National Science Day, the department hosted an online seminar titled “Research Methodologies in Solar Cell Science” on February 21, 2024. Dr. Anju Elsa Tom from St. Aloysius College, Trissur, skillfully facilitated the session, aiming to provide participants with foundational insights. Ms. Neenu Mary Thomas introduced Dr. Tom, while Ms. Jisna Jose welcomed attendees, fostering enthusiasm. Ms. Anjaly K. Paul extended gratitude to Dr. Tom and participants for their contributions, showcasing our commitment to knowledge exchange and innovation in science.

Community Lab

On February 15, 2024, the department hosted a special ‘Community Lab’ program for homemakers in Ward 27 of Angamaly Municipality. Led by second-year physics students Ms. Sreedevi Krishnakumar and Ms. Angel Rose George, the program focused on ‘Energy Conservation Techniques and Energy Management.’ Participants actively engaged, gaining practical tips and knowledge to implement energy-saving practices at home, reflecting the department’s commitment to community education and empowerment.

Picnic

The department organized a delightful one-day picnic to Vagamon on February 9, 2024. This excursion provided students and faculty with a refreshing break from academic endeavors.

Christmas Celebrations

The spirit of Christmas was joyously celebrated on December 22, 2023, within the department. Festivities included a heartwarming cake cutting ceremony, symbolizing unity and shared joy among students and faculty. Additionally, Christmas greetings were exchanged, fostering a sense of warmth as everyone came together to commemorate the festive season.

Energy Conservation Day

In commemoration of Energy Conservation Day, the department jointly with IIC and energy  conservation club, conducted a workshop titled ‘ECOGLOW’ on December 14, 2024. The workshop focused on practical training in LED bulb assembly, providing participants with hands-on experience in energy-efficient technology. Ms. Neenu Mary Thomas as the resource person, guiding attendees through the intricacies of LED bulb assembly and highlighting the importance of energy conservation. This initiative underscored our commitment to promoting sustainability and equipping students with valuable skills for a greener future.

Power Quiz

In collaboration with the KSEB Officer’s Association, the department organized a Power Quiz on November 21, 2023. We are proud to announce that Ms. Adhulya P.A., a first-year B.Sc. Physics student, clinched the first prize, while Ms. Shilpa P.S., pursuing her first year of M.Sc. Chemistry, secured the second prize.

Scintilla 2023

As part of ‘EDUCERE 2023’, the department organized Scintilla 2023 on October 26-27, 2023. This event featured exhibits on Astrophysics, Revolution, and Fun and Facts, with a dedicated session on Robotics. Students from both Higher Secondary Schools and High Schools participated actively, igniting a passion for learning and exploration in physics.

Silver Jubilee Celebration of the department

As part of the department’s Silver Jubilee Celebration, a quiz competition for Higher Secondary School students culminated on October 26, 2023. Mar Augustine Memorial Higher Secondary School Koratty claimed first place, followed by Mar Athanasius Higher Secondary School Athani in second, and De Paul Higher Secondary School Angamaly in third.

Artificial Intelligence and Robotics

An orientation class on “Artificial Intelligence and Robotics was arranged on 27 September 2023.Mr. Gokul T.S. and Ms. Apsitha M.Saji from ‘I Hub Research and Robotics Pvt.Ltd. Cochin served as the resource persons.

Session on Capacitive Building & Skill Enhancement

The Department of Physics, in collaboration with IQAC, hosted a session on “Capacitive Building & Skill Enhancement” on September 26, 2023. Mr. Eldhose Poulose, Corporate Trainer from Career Guru, Ernakulam, led the session in the college auditorium, aiming to equip students with essential skills in capacitive building.

Study Tour

On September 25, 2024, physics students and open course participants visited Mithradam Renewable Energy Center for a study tour. The excursion offered insights into renewable energy technologies and sustainable practices, enhancing their understanding of energy production and conservation.

Project-making sessions

As a component of experiential learning, project-making sessions were organized on October 20th and 21st, 2023. These sessions provided students with hands-on opportunities to apply theoretical concepts in practical settings, fostering creativity, problem-solving skills, and teamwork. By engaging in project-based learning, students gained valuable real-world experience, preparing them for future academic and professional endeavors.

World Space Week

Commemorating World Space Week, the department arranged an interdepartmental quiz competition on October 11, 2023. This intellectually stimulating event drew participation from various disciplines. Ms. Shilpa P.S. and Ms. Afnitha P.T., representing the M.Sc. Chemistry program, won the first and second prizes respectively.

Face Painting Competition

The department organized the ‘Azadi’ inter-departmental Face Painting Competition on August 17, 2023, in celebration of Independence Day. Eleven teams participated, with Ms. Vismaya Pradeep & Ms. Devika K.V. winning first place, followed by Ms. Safna T.D. & Ms. Anagha Lalu in second, and Ms. Nayana T.D. & Sr. Sathma Josy in third. The event highlighted student artistic talents and promoted unity across departments.

Departmental Alumni Reunion

On August 12, 2023, the department hosted a heartwarming alumni get-together, providing a platform for former students to reconnect and reminisce about their shared experiences and cherished memories. This event served as a testament to the enduring bond among alumni, highlighting the significant role the department has played in shaping their lives and careers.

Popular Science Lecture on “Indian Lunar Science and Exploration Programme and its Global Context”

Students attended an online Popular Science Lecture on “Indian Lunar Science and Exploration Programme” by Smt. Megala S., Deputy Director at ISRO Headquarters, Bengaluru, on July 20, 2023. The session highlighted India’s lunar exploration efforts and global significance, aiming to inspire curiosity and scientific exploration among students.

International Moon Day

In connection with International Moon Day department organized various programs. Lunar Quiz 2023 an online quiz competition for Higher Secondary students on 20 July 2023.  ‘Lunar Spot Quiz’ was also arranged on the same day at institutional level and students from various departments actively participated and prizes were distributed.

Live streaming of Chandrayaan-3 launch

On July 14, 2023, the Department of Physics organized a live streaming session of the historic Chandrayaan-3 launch. This event provided students with the opportunity to witness firsthand the momentous occasion of Chandrayaan-3’s launch. By facilitating this live streaming, the department aimed to inspire and engage students in the exciting realm of space exploration, fostering a deeper appreciation for scientific advancements and innovation.

Awareness program on Robotics and Coding

Awareness program on ‘Robotics and Coding’ was organized on 11 November 2022.Ms. Lincy Lexy, faculty from DCS Robotics from Aluva handled the session. The team demonstrated various experiments based on the topic.

Morning Star Lecture Series

Morning Star Lecture Series was arranged on 10 November 2022. Dr. Ajith Thomas was the resource person. The topic of the lecture was ‘Science around Us’. The resource person demonstrated various phenomena that occur around us. The session was really informative and students benefited from the workshop.

Science Talk

In connection with World Science Day, Science Talk was arranged on 10 November 2022 at Speakers Corner. Angel Rose George (I. Physics) and Gouri Suresh (II Physics) delivered a talk on the focal theme ‘Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development.’

Come let’s explore

‘Come Let’s Explore’ programme organized for Higher Secondary students of the neighboring school students was arranged on 08 November 2022. Various experiments were exhibited in the laboratory. Nearly 75 students benefited from the programme.

Community Lab 2022

Community Lab programme was conducted on 28 November 2022 at ‘Pakalveed’ to the   house keeping ladies. The students communicated to the participants on the topic ‘House Hold Energy Management Techniques.’ Aneena Peter, Aysha T.A, Maria Pappachan and Marykutty V.V. of III Physics were the spokespersons.

Story Writing

Department in association with National Service Scheme conducted Story Writing competition in connection with ‘LAHARI MUKTHA KERALAM’ on 25 October 2022.’Impact of Drug Abuse’ was the theme.16 students participated in the competition Nandana K.N. (II B.Voc.) & Athira Vijayan (I M.Sc. Chemistry) secured first and second prizes respectively.

Power Quiz was conducted in association with Kerala State Officers Association on 20 October 2022. Aysha T.A. (III Physics) and Anakha P.M. (II PG Chemistry) secured first and second prizes respectively and were selected to State level competition

Study Tour 2022

As part of world Space week on October 7th, 2022, PG and UG Physics students visited Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (ISRO) and Priyadarshini Space Planetarium Trivandrum. The students and staff witnessed Rocket Launching at ISRO.

Onam 2022

The departmental Onam celebration was on 2nd September. Students organized ‘Onam sadhya’ and a few cultural programs to make the event cheerful.

Student Lecture Series

Department organised Student Lecture Series – I on 3 August, 2022 on the topic ‘Lets Crack IOT ‘. Ms.Aneena Peter and Ms. Aysha T. A.( III Physics) handled the session.

Sky watch

Department organised ‘Sky Watch’ programme on 11 March, 2022. Dr. N.Shaji, Former Associate Professor, Maharajas College Ernakulam was the resource person. The resource person gave a briefing about the Sky-Watcher telescope, various constellations and facts about moon. Students could able to watch moon’s surface clearly and many stars namely Sirius, Kartika, Orion constellation, Taurus constellation etc. Sky watch programme was really a wonderful experience to students.

National Science Day

The Department of Physics, Morning Star Home Science College, Angamaly in association with Academy of Physics teachers, Kerala celebrated National Science Day 2022. The focal theme of the event was Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for a sustainable future. A seminar was organized for the students of the department on March 4, 1 pm on the topic “Research Approaches in Nanoscience”. The resource person for the session was Dr. Sr. Simi NJ, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, Newman College, Thodupuzha. The resource person introduced basic concepts in nanoscience and nanotechnology to students in a very effective way.

Community Lab

Community Lab Programme on ‘LED Series Bulb Assembling’ was organized on 21 December 2021. The main objective of the programme was transaction of knowledge to the community. This time the programme was given to the high school students.

Achievement in Yogasana: Ms. Athulya P.A

Ms. Athulya P.A. secured 6th position in the Ernakulam District Yogasana Championship held on September 7, 2024. She further showcased her skills by participating in the State Yogasana Championship on October 20, 2024, where she once again secured 6th position. Her consistent performance highlights her dedication and excellence in the discipline of Yogasana.

Academic Achievement: Ms. Farisha C.A. Secures 8th Position in University

Ms. Farisha C. A. secured 8th position in the university for her B.Sc. Physics Model II Applied Electronics program. This remarkable achievement highlights her dedication and excellence in academics.

Students of Final year B. Sc Physics: Ms. Sajna Basheer ,Ms. Farisha C.A published a book chapter in Scholars’ Press book “Science and Technology for Sustainable Development Goals” edited by T. R. Anju, Balarama Kaimal (Eds), ISBN: 978-620-6-76890-6.

Ms. Goury Suresh, has secured a placement in Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in Business Process Services.

Paper Presentation

In June 2023, Sajana Basheer L and Farisha C A, final year B.Sc Physics students, presented their paper at the international conference “Role of Science and Technology in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals.” Their contribution added valuable insights to the discussions on advancing sustainable development through science and technology. Energy Conservation

The Department actively promotes energy conservation through various initiatives, emphasizing its role in achieving energy independence. Engaging stakeholders, the department conducts Science Popularization Programmes, Student Solar Ambassador workshops, and awareness campaigns, often funded by organizations like KSCSTE and EMC. Practical efforts include distributing LED bulbs, organizing workshops on LED assembly and energy audits, and using decals in labs and classrooms. Additionally, the department encourages green practices, replacing plastic bottles with stainless steel ones, opting for bamboo mats over flex materials, and establishing eco-friendly classrooms. These proactive steps reflect the department’s commitment to sustainability and environmental consciousness.
