Physics

The Department of Physics started functioning with the initiation of the Pre-degree programme in 1981 and became a full-fledged department with the introduction of B.Sc. Physics in 1999.

M.Sc. in Physics was started in 2013. The department has a departmental library with sufficient books, a computer lab, a general lab, and a well-equipped electronics lab. The faculty members in the department are life members of the Indian Association of Physics Teachers. The department conducts a power Quiz in co-operation with Kerala Electricity Board.

ICT Classrooms

The ICT classrooms in the Department of Physics offer transformative benefits, enhancing the learning experience for students. These classrooms facilitate interactive teaching, engaging students in dynamic simulations, virtual experiments, and real-time data analysis. The integration of Information and Communication Technologies enables personalized learning, encouraging active participation and in-depth understanding of complex physics concepts. The ICT classrooms not only enrich classroom lectures but also prepare students for research, equipping them with essential digital skills and enhancing their overall academic performance.


UG Physics Laboratory

Undergraduate students benefit from well-maintained facilities in the Physics Core Lab, Electronics Lab, and Computer Lab. These meticulously equipped spaces offer students hands-on experience and practical learning opportunities. In the Physics Core Lab, they explore fundamental concepts through experiments, while the Electronics Lab provides a platform for understanding electronic circuits and devices. Additionally, the Computer Lab enhances their computational skills, enabling them to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios.


PG Physics Laboratroy

The Post Graduate department boasts state-of-the-art infrastructural facilities, featuring well-equipped laboratories with modern instruments, all housed in centralized air-conditioned labs. These facilities provide ample space for teacher demonstrations, student laboratory activities, and secure storage. The lab is divided into three major sections: one for general experiments, another for electronics experiments, and a third dedicated to computer programming experiments. Each section is meticulously furnished and equipped with internet facilities, ensuring a conducive environment for comprehensive academic and research activities.

Activities

Awareness program on Robotics and Coding

Awareness program on ‘Robotics and Coding’ was organized on 11 November 2022.Ms. Lincy Lexy, faculty from DCS Robotics from Aluva handled the session. The team demonstrated various experiments based on the topic.

Morning Star Lecture Series

Morning Star Lecture Series was arranged on 10 November 2022. Dr. Ajith Thomas was the resource person. The topic of the lecture was ‘Science around Us’. The resource person demonstrated various phenomena that occur around us. The session was really informative and students benefited from the workshop.

Science Talk

In connection with World Science Day, Science Talk was arranged on 10 November 2022 at Speakers Corner. Angel Rose George (I. Physics) and Gouri Suresh (II Physics) delivered a talk on the focal theme ‘Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development.’

Come let’s explore

‘Come Let’s Explore’ programme organized for Higher Secondary students of the neighboring school students was arranged on 08 November 2022. Various experiments were exhibited in the laboratory. Nearly 75 students benefited from the programme.

Community Lab 2022

Community Lab programme was conducted on 28 November 2022 at ‘Pakalveed’ to the   house keeping ladies. The students communicated to the participants on the topic ‘House Hold Energy Management Techniques.’ Aneena Peter, Aysha T.A, Maria Pappachan and Marykutty V.V. of III Physics were the spokespersons.

Story Writing

Department in association with National Service Scheme conducted Story Writing competition in connection with ‘LAHARI MUKTHA KERALAM’ on 25 October 2022.’Impact of Drug Abuse’ was the theme.16 students participated in the competition Nandana K.N. (II B.Voc.) & Athira Vijayan (I M.Sc. Chemistry) secured first and second prizes respectively.

Power Quiz 2022

Power Quiz was conducted in association with Kerala State Officers Association on 20 October 2022. Aysha T.A. (III Physics) and Anakha P.M. (II PG Chemistry) secured first and second prizes respectively and were selected to State level competition

Study Tour 2022

As part of world Space week on October 7th, 2022, PG and UG Physics students visited Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (ISRO) and Priyadarshini Space Planetarium Trivandrum. The students and staff witnessed Rocket Launching at ISRO.

Onam 2022

The departmental Onam celebration was on 2nd September. Students organized ‘Onam sadhya’ and a few cultural programs to make the event cheerful.

Student Lecture Series

Department organised Student Lecture Series – I on 3 August, 2022 on the topic ‘Lets Crack IOT ‘. Ms.Aneena Peter and Ms. Aysha T. A.( III Physics) handled the session.

Sky watch

Department organised ‘Sky Watch’ programme on 11 March, 2022. Dr. N.Shaji, Former Associate Professor, Maharajas College Ernakulam was the resource person. The resource person gave a briefing about the Sky-Watcher telescope, various constellations and facts about moon. Students could able to watch moon’s surface clearly and many stars namely Sirius, Kartika, Orion constellation, Taurus constellation etc. Sky watch programme was really a wonderful experience to students.

National Science Day

The Department of Physics, Morning Star Home Science College, Angamaly in association with Academy of Physics teachers, Kerala celebrated National Science Day 2022. The focal theme of the event was Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for a sustainable future. A seminar was organized for the students of the department on March 4, 1 pm on the topic “Research Approaches in Nanoscience”. The resource person for the session was Dr. Sr. Simi NJ, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, Newman College, Thodupuzha. The resource person introduced basic concepts in nanoscience and nanotechnology to students in a very effective way.

Community Lab

Community Lab Programme on ‘LED Series Bulb Assembling’ was organized on 21 December 2021. The main objective of the programme was transaction of knowledge to the community. This time the programme was given to the high school students.

Achievements

Paper Presentation

During June 16 and 17, 2023, Sajana Basheer L and Farisha C A, final year students of B.Sc Physics, had the honor of presenting their paper at an esteemed International conference. The conference, titled “Role of Science and Technology in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals,” was a collaborative effort organized by the Department of Botany & Biotechnology at Newman College, Tjodupuzha, Kerala, the Department of Zoology at CMS College, Kottayam, Kerala, and CSP Alumni, in association with Mahatma Gandhi University.

Their paper contributed valuable insights to the conference, where scholars and researchers gathered to discuss the vital role of science and technology in advancing sustainable development goals. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Sajana Basheer L and Farisha C A for their exceptional contribution to this significant event. Witnessing the dedication and scholarly prowess of our B.Sc Physics final year students showcased on an international platform fills us with immense pride.

Ms. Karthika Gopakumar ( II Physics) participated in the 33rd Senior Tug of  War National Championship (Men & Women) held at Agra on 6-8 March 2021 and won the Gold Medal.

Ms. Soorya Sudheer (III Physics) presented a poster titled “Structural and Electrical Characteristics of ZnO nanoparticles” in the national conference on Optoelectronic and Nano Materials for Advanced Technology (NCOMTAT 2021).

Energy Conservation

The Department actively promotes energy conservation through various initiatives, emphasizing its role in achieving energy independence. Engaging stakeholders, the department conducts Science Popularization Programmes, Student Solar Ambassador workshops, and awareness campaigns, often funded by organizations like KSCSTE and EMC. Practical efforts include distributing LED bulbs, organizing workshops on LED assembly and energy audits, and using decals in labs and classrooms. Additionally, the department encourages green practices, replacing plastic bottles with stainless steel ones, opting for bamboo mats over flex materials, and establishing eco-friendly classrooms. These proactive steps reflect the department’s commitment to sustainability and environmental consciousness.
