The self-financing B.A programme in English language and Literature was started in 2015. The Department of English conducts a certificate course in Communicative English. A well-equipped Language Lab installed with interactive Language Software and a Department Library holding around 400 books for ready reference are the remarkable features of the Department.
The introduction of ICT classrooms in the Department of English has significantly elevated the learning experience, making it exceptionally interactive and engaging. With state-of-the-art technology and seamless internet connectivity, these classrooms have transformed traditional teaching methods into dynamic and participative sessions. Through interactive multimedia presentations, online resources, and collaborative learning platforms, students can explore literary texts, language nuances, and critical theories in innovative ways.
Inter-School Painting Competition
On 7th November 2024, the Department of English, in association with the Literary Club, hosted an exciting Inter-School Painting Competition for higher secondary students. The event showcased the creative talents of young artists from various schools. The winners were:

Workshop on AI-Assisted Learning
On 25th October 2024, Ms. Anju Lovely Wilson, Assistant Professor in the Department of English, conducted an engaging workshop on AI-assisted learning. Held at the Computer Lab, the session introduced students to the innovative use of artificial intelligence in enhancing the learning process. The workshop provided valuable insights into AI tools and technologies, demonstrating how they can be leveraged for academic success, research, and personal development in the digital age.
Talk on Content Writing: Exploring Creative Writing Apps
On 9th October 2024, Ms. Anumol Paulose, Assistant Professor in the Department of English, conducted a seminar introducing students to various apps for creative writing. The session highlighted the potential of digital tools to enhance writing skills, offering students practical resources to aid in their creative processes. The seminar provided a hands-on approach to integrating technology with creativity, empowering students to experiment with new writing formats and improve their craft.
A Talk on Content Writing
On 8th October 2024, the Department of English organized an insightful talk on “Content Writing,” featuring Sreekkutty Manu, a Content Writing Expert and Digital Marketing Manager at Valappila Communications Ltd., Ernakulam, as the resource person. The session provided students with valuable industry insights, covering the essentials of content creation, digital marketing, and effective communication strategies. Sreekkutty Manu’s expertise and practical tips inspired students to explore content writing as a dynamic and rewarding career path.
Seminar on Indian Knowledge System
On 4th October 2024, the Department of English organized a seminar aimed at exploring the rich and diverse heritage of India’s ancient knowledge traditions. The seminar on the “Indian Knowledge System” provided students with valuable insights into India’s intellectual and cultural legacy, fostering a deeper understanding of its philosophical, scientific, and literary contributions to the world. The event sparked thoughtful discussions and inspired students to appreciate the depth of India’s ancient wisdom.
Meet the Author: An Inspirational Session with Anju Mariya Babu
On 27th September 2024, the Department had the privilege of hosting Anju Mariya Babu, an autodidactic writer and poet, for a special “Meet the Author” event. Anju, who has published a collection of poetry, shared her inspiring journey of self-learning and passion for writing. Her personal experiences and insights motivated the students, encouraging them to explore their own creative potential and pursue their literary dreams.
Visit to Valappila Communications, Vyttila
On August 4th, both the 3rd-year and 1st-year students of the English Department visited Valappila Communications at Vyttila. This insightful trip offered students a unique opportunity to explore the world of communication and gain firsthand experience in the industry, enhancing their academic learning with real-world exposure.
Celebrating J.K. Rowling: A Magical Film Screening for Students
On July 31st, the Department of English celebrated the birthday of J.K. Rowling, the renowned author, with a special screening of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The event, held in the Conference Hall, was attended by students from both the English and Economics Departments, offering a delightful and magical experience to all those present.
Seminar on Mural Painting
The department, in collaboration with the Literary Club, organized a seminar on Mural Painting on March 26th. Ms. Jeethu T.J, a Lecturer from the Department of English, served as the resource person.
Inter-departmental Poetry Writing Competition
The Department, in collaboration with the Literary Club, organized an inter-departmental poetry writing competition in honor of World Poetry Day on March 21st.
Workshop on Classical Dramas
The Department of English, in collaboration with the Literary Club, organized a workshop on Classical Dramas on March 19, 2024. The workshop featured Mrs. Thankam Mohan, a Theatre and Cine Artist, and Saji Thulasidas, an Actor and Director, as the resource persons.
Webinar on Effective Communication Apps
The Department of English, in collaboration with the Literary Club, organized a webinar titled “Introducing Effective Apps for Better Communication” on March 18, 2024. Ms. Jasmin, a Lecturer from the Department of English, served as the resource person for the event.
Outreach Programme for Differently Abled Students
The department organized an outreach programme for the differently abled students of Junior Basic School, Nayathodu, on March 15th.
Inter-departmental Competitions
The Department of English organized Inter-departmental Handwriting and Short Story Competitions on March 14th. In the Handwriting Competition, Ann Mariya. M. Jude (2nd B.A. English), Angel Maria (1st B.A. English), and Asmi Rumeisan (2nd B.A. English) secured the first, second, and third prizes respectively. In the Short Story Writing Competition, Ann Mariya. M. Jude (2nd B.A. English), Sr. Subitha (2nd B.A. English), Geethika Saji (1st B.A. English), and Asmi Rumeisan (2nd B.A. English) won the first, second, and third prizes respectively.
Study Tour to Marayoor, Kanthalloor, and Munnar
A study tour was organized for the 2nd and 3rd year students to Marayoor, Kanthalloor, and Munnar on February 5th and 6th (Monday and Tuesday).
Afforestation Drive at Thumboormuzhi: A Collaborative Effort
In collaboration with the Kerala Tourism Department, Athirappilly-Vazhachal-Thumboormuzhi DMC, the Department of English organized an outreach program. On November 13, 2023, we conducted an ‘Afforestation Drive’ at Thumboormuzhi as part of this initiative.
Photography Competition
The Department of English, in collaboration with the Kerala Tourism Department Athirappilly-Vazhachal-Thumboormuzhi DMC, organized a Photography Competition on the theme “Leaves of Literature, Scenes of Serenity.” Anjana P.B. was awarded the 1st prize, which included a sponsored tour package by Thumboormuzhi DMC. Fathima Asif secured the 2nd prize, earning an entry pass to the Athirapalli, Thumboormuzhi, Vazhachal destinations.
Meaning Hunt Competition
The Department of English, in collaboration with National Dictionary Day, organized a Meaning Hunt competition held on November 9, 2023, in the 3rd BA English class at 1:00 pm. Sona of 1st B.Com secured the 1st prize, Alka of 1st B.Com received the 2nd prize, and Niya of 1st B.Com secured the 3rd prize.
Reading Competition
The Department of English, in collaboration with the Literary Club, organized a reading competition on November 8, 2023, at the 3rd year BA English class at 1:00 pm. Alka of 1st B.Com secured the 1st prize, Athulya of 1st B.Sc Physics secured the 2nd prize, and Angel Maria of 1st M.Sc Zoology received the 3rd prize.
Educare-2023: Exploring “The Leading Path”
Morning Star Home Science College recently hosted an education expo titled “Educare-2023, the Leading Path.” The program was inaugurated by Sri Dinesh.M. Pillai, Additional District and Senior Judge of Perumbavoor, with the keynote address delivered by Chandy Oommen, MLA of Puthupally Constituency. The lucky draw, known as Lucky Star Soiree, was conducted by Sri. Sharf U Dheen, a prominent film actor. Throughout the expo, various departments organized a diverse range of programs, with the Department of English presenting the theme of Halloween as “Enchanted Realms.”
Life Skill Development Program: Lifecraft for Success
The Department of English recently organized a life skill development program titled “Lifecraft: Mastering Essential Skills For Success.” Mr. P.S. Vinayan, a seasoned Soft Skill Development Trainer and Entrepreneur, served as the resource person for the event. The program aimed to equip participants with vital skills essential for personal and professional success, providing valuable insights and practical strategies for navigating life’s challenges effectively.
Reading Week Celebration 2023: Promoting Literacy and Excellence
The College Library and the Department of English jointly organized a Reading Week Celebration in 2023, starting on June 13th. Dr. A.T. Francis, Professor and HOD of Library and Information Science at RCSS Kalamassery, inaugurated the event with a talk on “Reading for Excellence in Education.” The celebration continued until June 22nd, featuring competitions such as interdepartmental college and poster contests, Book Talk sessions, Find the Book challenges, and Write a Story activities, all aimed at promoting literacy and excellence.

Get Lit 2k22
The Department of English, in association with the Literary Club, organized “Get Lit 2k22” Literary Competitions. The program took place from 19th to 23rd December 2022.
Mystery Trail
The department of English conducted a treasure hunt “Mystery Trail” on 31-10-22 at 12.50 pm. Five teams consisting of five members from the department of B.Voc, M.Sc.Zoology, M.Sc. Chemistry, and B.Com participated in the competition. The team from the PG department of Chemistry won the treasure hunt competition.
Freshers’ Day
A warm welcome was given to the freshers by the department of English, by organizing the Freshers’ day celebration “Oneiric fiesta”. The Freshers’ day celebration was held in the third B.A. English classroom on 17-10-2022 at 1.30 pm.
Times of India
We have facilitated the subscription to the Times of India Newspaper, through the “Times of India campus programme”, to the students in order to enrich their vocabulary and style of writing. At present, 13 students in our department are benefitting from this programme. We are providing newspapers for 132 working days at a reasonable rate of rs. 555/-.
Punctuations
The Department of English organized an interdepartmental Insert Punctuation Competition, in association with National Punctuation Day, at the third B. A. English classroom on 26-09-2022, at 12.50 pm. 25 teams, which contain 2 members participated in the competition. Rosemaria Antony and Aaliya Mujeeb of second B. Sc. FCS and Anna Treesa George and Sehna Jamal of first MSc chemistry bagged the first prize. Aysha Nargees and Anagha Sabu of second B. Sc. zoology won second prize.
‘No’ to Drugs
An Anti-Addiction Campaign was organized by the department of English in association with the Youth Red Cross and The Fourth Wave Foundation, as a part of their initiative Project ‘Venda’. The Beneficiaries of the programme were the students of the Department of English and the Department of Commerce. It was held at the Conference Hall of the college, on 17th August 2022 at 10.30 am.
Film Show
The Department of English organized a film show, ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, commemorating the birthday of the famous British writer, J.K. Rowling. The film show was conducted at Conference Hall on 01-08-2022 at 12.50 pm, and the students of second-year B. A. English and second-year B.A. Economics were the beneficiaries.
RAW -Selfie
The Department of English organized an inter-departmental Selfie Competition, “RAW”-Resemble A Writer! In connection with International Selfie Day on 22-06-2022, the students had to send a selfie resembling any writer of their choice. Sivani Binoj, Annmary Mattekkaatt, and Sruthi .M., second-year B. A. English students secured first, second, and third positions respectively in the competition.
Dear Diary
The Department of English organized an inter-departmental Diary Writing Competition ‘Dear Diary’, on 12-06-2022 on the topic: “GLOSSOPHOBIA”, commemorating the birthday of Anne Frank who was famous for her poignant diary. Tania Maria John of third-year B.Sc.FCS bagged the first prize and Siva Lakshmi. S. of second-year B.Sc.Chemistry secured the second prize in the competition
Tour and Travel
A study tour was organized for students of III B A English between 31 March 2022 to 2 April 2022. 15 students along with 5 faculty members went on the trip to Wayand and visited places of historical importance.
College Day
Students of B. A. English Language and Literature performed in the College Day celebrated on 25 March 2022 held in the college auditorium.
PTA Meet
First offline Parent Teacher Meeting for the B. A. English students was conducted on 14 March 2022 at 12:30 pm. The Parent Teacher Meeting, with a goal to build a healthy relationship with the students and parents, discussed students’ progress and performance. Parents were given feedbacks on their wards performances internal examinations. The parents were intimated about the meeting well in advance.
Women’s Day
In connection with International Women’s Day , Department of English in association with St. Judes Counseling Centre organized an Invited Talk on ‘Words to World : Empowering Women’ on 9 march 2022. Dr. Poulose V. D. was the keynote speaker. Students of B. A. English and B. Voc attended the session conducted in the seminar hall.
Community Lab
As a part of Community Lab Program, The Department of English organized a Workshop titled ‘Introducing the Language of Internet’ for empowering rural women of Kudumbasree Unit no. 15 on 15 December 2021. Ms. Merrin Wilson, faculty of Department of English , familiarized terms related to e-commerce to all the participants and demonstrated how to use e-commerce websites and applications
Talents Day
Talents Day was conducted for I year students on 18 November 2021. All the students from I B.A English participated in the Talents Day.
Quiz
An intradepartmental quiz competition on Indian Literature was organized by the Department for Engish Literature students on 16 December 2021. Anita Maria Jomy, Akshaya K O, Niya Thomas, Ann Nelson and Sr. Stency Devassy of II B A English were given prizes.
La Carta
The Department of English in connection with World Post Day organized ‘La Carta’ – An interdepartmental letter-writing competition on 9 October 2021. Several students from different departments participated in the competitions and E-Certificates were provided to the winners.
Gender Lessons
The Department of English in association with Alumni association organized a webinar on the topic ‘Unlearning Gender Lessons’ on 3 September 2021 through Google Meet. Dr. Lakshmi S., Head of the Department of Government College Tripunithura was the resource person. 90 participants attended the webinar.
Onam Celebration
Onam celebration was organized virtually on 20th August 2021 on Google Meet at 4 PM. Ms. Vincy, faculty of Malayalam, delivered the Onam Message. Students of the II and III years presented different cultural programmes online.
Alumni Meet
The Department of English organized an Alumni Meet on 8th August 2020 at 11:00 Am on Google Meet. The principal addressed the gathering and the items on the agenda were discussed.

The Department of English in association with NSS Unit no. 58 celebrated Reading week ‘lire et grandir’ from 19th June to 5th July. Several interdepartmental competitions including Click My Costume, Book Talk, Voice of Colours Competition, and Elocution were organized. E-certificates were issued to the winners of all competitions.
National Webinar
A National Webinar on “Skills for Fourth Industrial Revolution Post COVID 19” was conducted on 16 May 2020. The keynote speaker was Mr. Vighneswar K., Corporate Trainer and Chairman of TTT initiative (NGO). The webinar was open to the public.
Study Tour
The students of III BA English, assisted by three faculties went on a trip to Wayanad and Kozhikode from 26 to 29 January 2020.
Cynosure
The manuscript magazine of the Department of English, Cynosure 2020, was released by Ms. Sophia James, Head of the Department of Languages on 06 March 2020.
Street Play
In the Street Play competition organized by Women’s Cell on 3 December 2022, the students secured third prize.
Merit Day
Morning Star Home Science College celebrated Merit Day on 16 March 2022 in the college auditorium. On the occasion the students who excelled in Academics, Arts & Sports in the academic year 2021-2022 were lauded. Annmary Mattekatt of I B A English, Jennifer John of II B A English and Maria Saju of III B A English were given proficiency prizes. Shero Martin received scholarship prize in remembrance of Prof. Cicily James, former Head of English, instituted by Dr. P.K. Zachariah and family.

Ms. Donna John secured 8th rank in BA English Language and Literature, MG University.
In remembrance of Prof. Cicily James, former Head of English, a scholarship prize has been instituted by Dr. P.K. Zachariah and Family.
This prize is to be awarded to the:
1) Top scorer in BA English University Examination.
2) Top scorer in Common English in the 2nd year BA/BSc Model 2 University Examination.
3) Top scorer in Common English in the 2nd year BCom University Examination.
This award has been instituted by Prof. Cicily James, daughter of Panakal Jacob James, former Head of English. It is to be given to the student who attains the highest marks in English in the 2nd year B.A/B.Sc University Examination.
In an effort to enhance language skills and general knowledge, students are encouraged to subscribe to English newspapers, a valuable initiative undertaken by the Department of English. As part of this program, the department distributes ‘The Hindu’ newspaper to 50 students. By actively engaging with reputable publications, students not only improve their language proficiency but also stay informed about current affairs and diverse topics. This practice not only enriches their understanding of the English language but also cultivates a habit of staying updated with world events, contributing significantly to their overall academic and intellectual growth.
Launched on July 1, 2019, ‘Star Voice’ Morning Star Radio is a dynamic initiative by the Department of English. This student-led radio program provides a platform for budding radio jockeys to discuss diverse topics, such as the significance of special days and current events sourced from newspapers. Through engaging discussions, student RJs showcase their talents, enhance communication skills, and foster a sense of confidence. This innovative project not only hones their public speaking abilities but also encourages them to explore and express their thoughts on various subjects, enriching their overall learning experience within the department.
