Faculty and Student Exchange Programme
The Department of Zoology at Morning Star Home Science College, Angamaly, collaborated with Carmel College (Autonomous), Mala, to organize a faculty and student exchange programme on March 20 and 27, 2024. Ms. K Leena Joseph from Morning Star Home Science College conducted classes for B.Sc. Zoology complementary students at Carmel College, Mala, while Dr. Sr. Rini Maria from Carmel College handled classes for final year B.Sc. Zoology complementary students at Morning Star Home Science College. The classes were conducted both online and offline, benefiting approximately 30 students from the programme.
World Water Day Observation
The Department of Zoology organized a quiz and idea competition in commemoration of World Water Day on March 22, 2024, centered around the theme ‘water for peace’. Thirty-eight students participated in the quiz, with Ms. Devika Rajesh and Afnitha P T of I M Sc Chemistry securing the first position. Additionally, twenty students participated in the idea competition, with Anju Devassy of II B Sc Zoology and Fairooz Fathima of I M Sc Zoology winning the first and second prizes respectively. The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of water and promote sustainable management of freshwater resources.
Morning Star Lecture Series: Human-Wildlife Conflict
The Department of Zoology organized a lecture series on “Human-Wildlife Conflict” on March 19, 2024. Dr. T V Sajeev, Registrar in charge at KFRI, Peechi, and a renowned environmentalist, served as the resource person. The session highlighted the causes and outcomes of human-wildlife conflict, fostering discussions on conflict management strategies. Seventy B.Sc. Zoology and PG students benefited from the interactive seminar.
Photography for Scientific Research Seminar
The Department of Zoology organized a seminar on research methodology titled “Photography for Scientific Research” on March 18, 2024. Dr. Kalesh Sadasivan from Govt. Medical College Thrissur and Research Associate at TNHS served as the resource person. The session, focusing on macrophotography and photographic techniques, provided insights into modern photographic methods in scientific research. Seventy B.Sc. Zoology and PG students from various disciplines participated and benefited from the program.
Student as Teacher Programme by PG Department of Zoology
The PG Department of Zoology conducted a “Student as Teacher” programme for advanced learners. In this initiative, students with deep subject knowledge took classes for their peers. This programme not only allowed these students to enhance their own understanding but also fostered a collaborative learning environment among the PG students.
Certificate Course: Industrial Floriculture & Gardening
The Department of Zoology and Botany jointly organized a Certificate course in ‘Industrial Floriculture and Gardening’ from January 17 to March 15, 2024, for first and second year B.Sc. Zoology students. Sessions covered topics such as floriculture importance and trends, plant selection and cultivation, greenhouse management, floral design, integrated pest management, water conservation, garden types, and maintenance. Ms. Lakshmi M led the sessions, emphasizing the relevance of industrial floriculture and gardening through a group activity on floral arrangement. Seventeen students participated, benefiting from the program’s focus on entrepreneurial skills and creative utilization of time.

The Department of Zoology organized skill-based competitions to assess the acquired skills of B.Sc. Zoology students.
Certificate Course: Ornamental Fish Culture & Aquascaping
The Department of Zoology conducted a Certificate course in ‘Ornamental Fish Culture and Aquascaping’ from January 10 to March 12, 2024, for final year UG students. Fourteen students participated, gaining insights into various topics including the present status of ornamental fish culture in India, water factors, fish morphology, anatomy, breeding, nutrition, transportation, and common diseases. Ms. K Leena Joseph led the sessions, stressing the importance of ornamental fish culture and aquascaping for self-employment. The course aimed to equip students with entrepreneurial skills, facilitating productive use of their time.
Group Activity: Ornamental Fish Culture and Aquarium Management
On March 11, 2024, the Department of Zoology organized a group activity focused on ‘Ornamental Fish Culture and Aquarium Management’. Fourteen final year B.Sc. Zoology students participated in setting up an aquarium, collecting accessories such as pebbles, aquarium plants, aerator, and hand nets, and introducing fishes. This hands-on activity provided valuable practical experience to the students in ornamental fish culture and aquarium management.
ICT Skills in Bioinformatics Training
The Department of Zoology conducted a Skill Enhancement Programme on ICT Skills in Bioinformatics on February 19 and March 7, 2024. Sr. Marymol Joe, Assistant Professor from the PG Department of Zoology at Morning Star College, Angamaly, led the training, emphasizing the significance of computational tools in biology. The programme covered a general introduction to biological databases and tools in bioinformatics, along with practical sessions on various tools such as BLAST for sequence alignments, RasMol for molecular visualization, and PHYLIP for computational phylogenetics.
Medical Coding Career Guidance Seminar
The Department of Zoology, in collaboration with Cresco Safe, organized a Career Guidance Webinar on ‘Medical Coding’ on February 9, 2024. Sri Joy P. Mathew, Managing Director of Cresco Safe, discussed career opportunities in medical coding. Ms. Ashmy A. Baby, a CPC certified medical coder and hospital administration faculty at Cresco Safe, covered medical coding procedures. Fourteen final year B.Sc. Zoology students participated, and the vote of thanks was proposed by Ms. Aysha Nargees.
Gyanotsav Exhibition Visit
Final year B.Sc. Zoology students attended the ‘Gyanotsav’ exhibition at St. Xavier’s College for Women, Aluva, on January 12, 2024, as part of the college’s diamond jubilee celebrations. Ms. Lakshmi M. accompanied the students.

The PG Department of Zoology proudly published ZOONOVA 2023, the departmental academic journal featuring the project works of final-year students. This ISBN-registered journal offers students the opportunity to publish their research, serving both as a platform for showcasing their hard work and as a valuable reference for future academic endeavors.
World Fisheries Day
In celebration of World Fisheries Day on 21st November, the department organized a field visit to Marine World in Chavakkad. The theme for this year was “Celebrating the Wealth of Fisheries and Aquaculture.” This program provided students with in-depth knowledge about the species diversity of marine fishes, enriching their understanding of marine biodiversity and aquaculture practices.
Experiential Learning: Industrial Visit to CMFRI
On October 6th, the department organized an institutional visit to the National Marine Biodiversity Museum at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) in Kochi for second-year M.Sc. students. This visit aimed to enhance students’ abilities to monitor and assess the diverse species of marine and coastal environments while fostering a research-oriented mindset towards marine fisheries.
Field Trip to Mangalavanam Wetland Ecosystem: A Valuable Learning Experience
On October 6th, second-year M.Sc. students visited the Mangalavanam wetland ecosystem in Kochi. This field trip provided a valuable opportunity to understand the crucial role of mangroves in sustaining biodiversity. Through guided tours, students observed the rich flora and fauna, learning about the ecological importance of mangroves in coastal protection and carbon sequestration. The experience highlighted the need for conservation efforts and inspired students to contribute to environmental sustainability.
Bio-Scenique: Exploring Animal Life and Ecosystems
As part of the Education Expo- Educere, the Department of Zoology organized a two-day exhibition called Bio-Scenique on October 26 and 27, 2023. Bio-Scenique showcased the diversity of animal life across different ecosystems, including forests, deserts, and aquatic environments. The exhibition featured a wide array of entomological specimens, live fishes, and plants. Visitors had the opportunity to explore topics ranging from Cell and Molecular Biology, Developmental Biology, Microbiology, Physiology, to Vermitechnology.
Seminar on Research Methodology in Cytogenetic Laboratory Diagnosis
The Department of Zoology organized a two-day workshop on research methodology focusing on cytogenetic laboratory diagnosis for UG and PG zoology students. Dr. Sajayan Joseph, a Diplomate of the Royal College of Pathologists and section leader at Diagnostic Genetic Lab Plus, Auckland City Hospital, New Zealand, served as the resource person. The seminar covered current scenarios and modern laboratory diagnostic techniques for cytogenetic disorders on August 23, 2023, and various research methodologies in the analysis of cytogenetic disorders on October 9, 2023. Fifty B.Sc. and M.Sc. Zoology students participated, gaining insight into modern diagnostic techniques and ongoing international research in cytogenetics.
World Heart Day Observation
In honor of World Heart Day on September 29, 2023, the Department of Zoology conducted a quiz and poster making competition centered around the theme ‘Use Heart, Know Heart’. Thirty students participated in the quiz competition, with Aleesha Jolly of II B.A. Economics and Aysha Nargees of III B.Sc. Zoology securing first and second positions respectively. Additionally, Niranjana Krishna K of I M.Sc. Chemistry and Alka Shaju of I B.Com secured first and second positions respectively in the quiz. In the poster competition, which had 17 participants, Niranjana K R of II B.Com and Nasreen Banu of II B.Sc. Zoology won first and second prizes respectively. These activities aimed to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases, prevention, and their global impact.

Field Study Programme: College of Horticulture
On August 7, 2022, open course and final year B.Sc. Zoology students participated in a one-day field study programme at the College of Horticulture, Kerala Agricultural University, Vellanikkara. Ms. Sheeba K. S., Field Assistant, highlighted the significance of Vermiculture in solid waste management, discussing earthworm species, their life cycle, and vermiculture unit maintenance. The students also visited a quail farm at Meloor, where Mr. Siju Thomas provided insights into brooding, feeding, and management techniques for Japanese quail, including marketing strategies.
Entrepreneurship Workshop: “Honey to Money”
On August 7, 2023, the Department of Zoology organized an entrepreneurship workshop titled “Honey to Money” at the Department of Agriculture Ornithology, College of Horticulture, Kerala Agricultural University, Vellanikkara. The workshop was for open course and final year B.Sc. Zoology students. Mr. Mohanan S., Field Assistant, explained the scope of apiary and various techniques for running a profitable apiary. He discussed different honeybee species, management of each species, and the equipment used in apiculture. Ms. Aysha Nargees proposed the vote of thanks. The workshop helped 36 students, along with Ms. K. Leena Joseph, Ms. Ajitha T. V., and Ms. Lakshmi M., to develop entrepreneurial skills in beekeeping.
Bridge Course for I B.Sc. Zoology and FCS Students
From July 31 to August 4, 2023, a bridge course was conducted for I B.Sc. Zoology core and I B.Sc. FCS complementary students to familiarize them with the syllabus, help them adapt to the new academic environment, and equip them with knowledge about career opportunities in the field. A departmental aptitude test was held, in which Ms. Vinaya K. D. and Ms. Arunima Shaji of I B.Sc. Zoology secured the first position.
Webinar on Monsoon Diseases
The Department of Zoology organized a webinar titled “Monsoon Diseases: An Overview” on July 27, 2023, via Google Meet. Dr. Niranjana Davis from Jubilee Mission Medical College, Thrissur, served as the resource person. The event began with a prayer, and Ms. Ajitha T. V. welcomed the gathering. Dr. Davis provided an in-depth overview of various monsoon diseases, discussing their pathogenesis, transmission, and the importance of personal and environmental hygiene for prevention. About 50 participants attended and benefited from the program. Ms. Jewel Rose George proposed the vote of thanks.
Dengue Awareness and Mosquito Eradication Program
On July 21, 2023, the Department of Zoology organized a community lab program on ‘Dengue Awareness and Mosquito Eradication’ at Pakalveedu-Snehakkoodu. Ms. K. Leena Joseph and Dr. Teji K. T., Assistant Professors from Morning Star Home Science College, served as resource persons. The program began with a prayer, and Ms. Jobina Joy, Coordinator of Pakalveedu, welcomed the gathering. Ms. K. Leena Joseph discussed Dengue pathogenesis, life cycle, and transmission in the first session. Dr. Teji K. T. focused on mosquito eradication techniques and environmental hygiene in the second session. Awareness notices were distributed, and 26 participants shared their experiences. Ms. Vincy Sebastian proposed the vote of thanks, followed by light refreshments.

Orientation Programme for I B.Sc. Zoology Students
On July 10, 2023, an orientation programme was held for I B.Sc. Zoology students and their parents to familiarize them with the college’s rules and regulations and help them adapt to the new academic environment. Both students and parents actively participated, sharing their anxieties and expectations.
Field Visit to Vypin Island
On June 15, 2023, second and final year B.Sc. Zoology students visited Vypin Island. They observed various aquatic species and fish collection techniques. Fisherman Sri Manikandan explained the use of fishing gears like cast nets and Chinese nets. The visit, accompanied by Ms. K. Leena Joseph, Dr. Teji K. T., and Ms. Lakshmi M., familiarized students with the backwater ecosystem. The journey through the water metro included sights like Willingdon Island and Bolgatty Palace. Twenty-three students participated and benefited from the programme.
Nature Study Programme at Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary
On June 15, 2023, the Department of Zoology, in collaboration with OISCA International and the Department of Forestry and Wildlife, Kerala, organized a one-day nature study programme at Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary. Inaugurated by Sri. Manu Rajagopal, the event featured a keynote by Dr. N.C. Induchoodan on biodiversity conservation. Ms. K. Leena Joseph facilitated the seminar and interactive session. Twenty-three students participated, gaining insights into the sanctuary’s ecological importance.
World Oceans Day 2023
On June 12, 2023, the Department of Zoology celebrated World Oceans Day by hosting a crossword puzzle competition themed “Planet Ocean: Tides are Changing.” Twenty-four students participated, benefiting from the event. Ann Maria Jojo and Nandana Udayakumar of III B.Sc. Zoology won first prize, while Janani Ravi and Ardra J Modi of II M.Sc. Zoology secured second prize.
World Environment Day 2023
On June 5, 2023, the Department of Zoology celebrated World Environment Day by planting a Neem sapling in the college’s botanical garden. Ms. K. Leena Joseph, Head of the Department, welcomed the gathering. Principal Dr. Sr. Shemi George planted the Neem sapling, highlighting its efficiency in CO2 fixation, and emphasized solutions to plastic pollution under the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’.
Farewell 2023
The Department of Zoology organized a farewell event for the final year B.Sc students on 21st March 2023. The farewell message was delivered by Ms. K. Leena Joseph, and Dr. Teji K T felicitated the gathering. During the event, the students had the opportunity to share their experiences and memories from their time in the department.
Prizes for various competitions were distributed to deserving students, recognizing their achievements. The farewell program also included cultural performances and a light refreshment session. As a highlight, the overall performance award for the academic year was presented to Ms. Sreelakshmi S of III B.Sc. Zoology, acknowledging her outstanding performance throughout her studies.
Social Wellness
The Pathway-Social Wellness Programme, organized collaboratively by the Department of Zoology, Minority Welfare Department (Government of Kerala), and CCMY Aluva, took place from 8th to 10th February 2023. The inaugural ceremony was graced by Dr. Sr. Rosily A. V., the College Principal, and presided over by Mrs. Sulekha, the CCMY Principal. Throughout the event, participants engaged in enlightening sessions addressing diverse areas of social wellness. Topics ranged from ‘Introduction and Marriage for Social Wellness’ by Adv. Charly Paul to ‘Effective Communication Skills for Couples and Healthy Online Communication’ by Mrs. Lakshmi Priya. The program delved into essential themes like ‘Effective Management of In-law Relationships and Conflict Resolution Techniques’ by Mrs. Sapna K. S. and ‘Infant and Adolescent Parenting Skills, Sex Education, and Pregnancy’ by Dr. C. S. Ambika Devi.
Christmas 2022
The department celebrated Christmas on 23rd December 2022 with great enthusiasm. The Head of the Department of Zoology, Ms. K. Leena Joseph, delivered a Christmas message to the students and staff. The celebration included a variety of cultural programs and performances to commemorate the festive occasion. Additionally, cakes were distributed among the participants, adding to the joyous atmosphere of the event. The Christmas celebration provided an opportunity for the department members to come together, enjoy the festivities, and spread the holiday spirit.
Capacity Building
The Department of Zoology organized a skill enhancement and capacity building program on 7th and 8th December 2022. The seminar focused on the topic of ‘Mental Problems: Causes and Measures’. The resource persons for the program were Ms. Gayathri Gopalakrishnan and Ms. Liya George, Teacher Trainees of Snehasadan College of Special Education and alumnae of the Department of Zoology. On 7th December, Ms. Gayathri Gopalakrishnan discussed the causes of mental problems, while on 8th December, Ms. Liya George spoke about the various measures to lead a normal life.
Following the seminar, an interactive session was conducted, allowing students to clarify their doubts regarding mental and learning disabilities. A total of 26 first and second-year undergraduate students benefited from the program. The event aimed to enhance students’ understanding of mental health issues and equip them with measures to address and overcome such challenges.
Steps to Success
On 9th November 2022, the Department of Zoology in association with Sree Sankara College, Kalady organized an international webinar on career guidance and counseling titled ‘Steps to Success’. The webinar was conducted on Google Meet platform. Ms. K Leena Joseph, Head of the Department of Zoology, welcomed the participants. The resource person for the webinar was Sri. Amal Anup, Human Resource Advisor at Capilano University, North Vancouver, Canada. The webinar aimed to provide valuable insights and guidance to the students regarding career choices and steps to achieve success in their chosen fields. A total of 75 students from the Departments of Zoology at Sree Sankara College, Kalady, and Morning Star Home Science College, Angamaly, actively participated and benefitted from the program.
Laharimukthakeralam
On 31st October 2022, the Department of Zoology, in association with the National Service Scheme, organized an interdepartmental dance competition with the theme ‘Impact of Drug Abuse’ in connection with Laharimukthakeralam. A total of 35 students from various departments participated in the competition. The students’ performances were focused on conveying social messages related to women empowerment, gender issues, and women’s rights, among others. The first prize was awarded to M.Sc. Zoology students, the second prize to B.Sc. Zoology students, and the third prize to B.VOC students. The competition served as a platform to raise awareness about the negative impact of drug abuse through the medium of dance.
Vermicomposting 2022
On 26th October 2022, the Department of Zoology organized a group activity focused on ‘Vermicomposting.’ The students were divided into groups and collected various raw materials such as broken bricks, pebbles, coarse sand, loamy soil, coconut husk, vegetable wastes (like banana stem), and farm wastes from nearby areas. Dried cow dung obtained from a nearby convent was also used. The students prepared a vermibed and introduced earthworms into it, followed by alternating layers of cow dung and vegetable wastes. Regular watering and monitoring of the vermibed were carried out. Vermiwash was collected from the bottom as a byproduct. This activity benefitted a total of 8 students, providing them with practical experience in vermicomposting techniques.
Freshers’ Day 2022
On 17th October 2022, the department organized a Fresher’s Day for first-year degree students, adhering to the principles of green protocol. The event commenced with an ice-breaking session, fostering a friendly atmosphere among the students. Various games, cultural performances, and refreshments were part of the celebration, creating a memorable and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
Alumni Meet 2022
The department organized a departmental alumnae meeting in conjunction with the Alumnae general body meeting on 8th October 2022 at 11:30 am. The gathering provided an opportunity for the alumnae members to reunite with their friends and teachers, creating a joyful and nostalgic atmosphere.
Vermiculture
Organized group activity in Vermiculture technology for final year UG students on 26 October 2022. Group activity led by Dr. Teji K T explained Vermibed preparation step by step and management of the vermicomposting unit.
Zootech 2022
The department conducted an Orientation Programme to familiarize the working methods of lab Instruments for the First year M.Sc. Students (Experiential Learning). Students understood the principle and working methods of different kinds of advanced laboratory equipment such as spectrophotometers, Water analyzers, Centrifuges, Microtome, Camera Lucida etc.
Freshers’ Day 2022
Freshers’ Day for first-year degree students was organized on 17 October 2022 by Green Protocol. The celebrations included ice-breaking sessions followed by games, cultural programs, and refreshments.

The department conducted a field study on pond ecosystems for I M.Sc students. The students gained knowledge on the biotic and abiotic factors in freshwater ecosystem
Quiz Competition
Department of Zoology and the Bhoomithrasena Club conducted an online Quiz competition on ‘Wildlife and Environment’ in connection with Wildlife week celebrations on 10 October 2022.
40 B.Sc. Zoology students participated and benefitted from the Programme. Anagha Sabu of II B Sc Zoology, Thasleena T K and Minnumaria Francis of III B Sc Zoology, and Aysha Nargees of II B Sc Zoology won first, second, and third prizes respectively.
Field Trip to KAU
The one-day field trip to the College of Agriculture, Kerala Agricultural University, Vellanikkara was conducted for the open course and final year B.Sc Zoology students on 30th July 2022.
Dr. Ranjith M T, Assistant Professor, Department of Agricultural Ornithology delivered an introductory speech on the significance of Apiculture.
Sri Mohanan S gave a detailed session on different species of Honey bees, the social organization, and life cycle of Honey bees, Beekeeping equipment, and maintenance and management of an Apiary followed by field experience and training on Honey Bee culture and handling techniques.
Visit to KFRI
As part of the curriculum program, a field trip was conducted for II M Sc. students to Kerala Forest Research Institute, Peechi. Students got the opportunity to observe and understand the activities of different departments like the Seed Preservation Center, Soil Museum, Wildlife Sanctuary, Butterfly Garden, and Entomology Museum. Students benefited from first-hand experience and an opportunity to meet and hear from the experts there.
Peer Learning
Advanced learners of I M.Sc. Zoology, actively engaged in peer group learning based on Energy Cycles, aided with ICT tools. It creates greater confidence and independence in learning.
Nature Study
Department of Zoology and Oisca International in association with the Department of Forestry and Wildlife, Govt. of Kerala organized a one-day nature study program at Salim Ali Nature Study Centre, Nedumbassery on 13 June 2022. The programme included a visit to Suvarnodyanam Biological Park, a Seminar and an interactive session was held. The programme was inaugurated by Dr S. Unnikrishnan, IFS; Retired Deputy Conservator of forests who delivered a talk on ‘Environment and Sustainable development. Sri. Sasindran S explained the biodiversity and medicinal importance of different varieties of plants in Suvarnodyanam. The visit to the Suvarnodyanam Biological Park helped the students to familiarize themselves with the plants, their ecological importance and the ecosystem. 25 first and final year B Sc Zoology students benefitted from the Programme

Entomology Day
The program was aimed at developing a positive attitude and compassion towards our fellow creatures of our surroundings. The department observed World Entomology Day, on 8th June 2022 and as part of this, a poster competition was conducted. Theme: Butterflies- The Nature’s Angels. Students actively participated and prizes were distributed.

Just a minute Speech competition on 8th June 2022 based on the theme “Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean”. 10 students participated in the Programme. Anagha Sabu of I B Sc Zoology, Jewel Rose George of I B Sc Zoology, and Anu Sajan of III B Sc Zoology won first, second, and third prizes respectively
Farewell 2022
Farewell was organized by the department to the final year B.sc students on 31st March 2022. Ms. K Leena Joseph delivered the farewell message and Ms Dilsha Davis felicitated the gathering. The students shared their experiences and memories. Prizes of various competitions were distributed followed by cultural programmes and light refreshments. The overall performance award for this academic year was presented to Ms. Dona Jose of III BSc. Zoology.
Field Trip
A three-day field study programme was organized for II and III B. Sc Zoology students to Wayanad and Kozhikode from 25 to 27 March 2022. The students visited Kurumbalakotta Hills, Trekking Banasurasagar Dam, Meenmutty waterfalls (Trekking), Pookkode Lake, Honey Museum,Thusharagiri waterfalls and Kozhikode Beach. The students studied and experienced the aesthetic beauty and diversity of different ecosystems such as forest ecosystems, Dam ecology, lentic ecosystems and marine ecosystems. Students also visited the Honey Museum and a training session on culture techniques was given by Sri. Hashim Ramees about different species of honey bees, Honey Life cycle, and communication mechanism. beekeeping methods and equipment, honey bee products especially royal jelly.Honey processing equipment, honey bee products especially royal jelly, Honey with different flavors and tastes collected from different plants and parts of India. Ms. K. Leena Joseph, Dr. Teji K.T. and Dr.Sr. Philo T.J. accompanied the students.
Vermiculture
Dept. of Zoology in association with Community lab organized a vermiculture training programme in vermicomposting techniques at Nazareth Nagar for people in the neighbourhood on 23rd December 2021. Training was handled by the faculty, K. Leena Joseph and discussed the importance of vermiculture in the present scenario and Vermibed preparation. Vermicompost was also distributed among the participants.
Medical Coding
Department of Zoology in association with Al Salama Institute of Medical Coding organized a Career Guidance Webinar on ‘Coding and Billing’ on 26th November 2021. Ms. K Leena Joseph, Head, Department of Zoology welcomed the gathering. Dr. Dr. Pinky Anoj , BHMS delivered a talk on ‘Medical coder and Medical coding procedures’. Ms. Abhinaya Valsaraj, CPC certified medical coder and Faculty, Al Salama Institute of medical coding handled the session on ‘Medical coding: Career Opportunities’. 55 students from various science disciplines participated in the programme.
PTA Meet
Departmental class-wise online PTA meeting was held for II B.Sc Zoology students at 4pm and for III B.Sc. Zoology students at 5pm on 3rd July 2021. This interactive session was aimed at giving awareness about online classes to the parents and motivating students for better performance.
Oceans Day
Department of Zoology conducted a caption writing competition in connection with World Oceans Day celebrations on 8th June 2021 based on the theme “The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods” and Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources. 25 students participated in the programme and Sona Philip of I B Com, Aleena Shaju of III B Sc Zoology and Josmy Joy of III B Com and Dona Jose of III B Sc Zoology won first, second and third prizes respectively.
White Fungus
The students of the Department of Zoology created and presented an awareness video about white fungus, its mode of infection, symptoms, preventive measures and its impact on health in the present scenario of covid-19 pandemic through the link https://youtu.be/mH23Ot94KoI
Black Fungus
The students of the Department of Zoology created an awareness poster on the mode of infection, symptoms and preventive measures of Black fungus in the present scenario of covid-19 pandemic.
World Health Day
World Health Day is celebrated every year to raise awareness about the ongoing health issues that concern people across the world. The day is also used as an opportunity to spread awareness about the overall health and well-being of people. The theme of World Health Day 2022 is “Our Planet, Our Health”.The PG Department of Zoology conducted a speech competition for first-year students on this theme. The venue of the competition was the ‘Speaker’s Corner’ of the college campus. Students shared their valuable views on this topic.
World Water Day
World Water Day was observed on March 22 to raise awareness about the importance of water and educate people to conserve it. The PG Department of Zoology conducted a speech competition for first and second-year students. The theme of World Water Day this year is “Groundwater, Making the Invisible, Visible”. Students actively participated in the competition. The winners were Akhila K (First Prize), Anusha G.& Sreelakshmi Baiju (Second Prize).
Alumni Meet 2021
An online departmental alumni meeting was held on 8th August 2021 at 5.30 pm. Ms. K Leena Joseph, Head of the Department of Zoology welcomed the gathering. Retired faculty members and around 40 alumnae members were present at the meeting.
Certificate Course on ‘Ornamental Fish Culture’ 2021
Department of Zoology conducted a certificate course in ‘Ornamental Fish Culture’ from 15th to 30th May 2021 for the I and II BSc chemistry students and about 50 students benefited from the programme. Ms. K Leena Joseph, Dr. Teji K T, Ms. Jerry Thomas, Ms. Riji Joseph, Ms. Chandni P K and Sr. Mary Joe handled various sessions on common ornamental fishes, breeding, nutrition, types, and formulation of fish feed, common diseases of aquarium fishes and aquarium management, setting up of a freshwater aquarium and rearing of ornamental fishes. The evaluation was done through an online exam in Google Forms and e- Certificates were issued to the participants after the successful completion of the course.
ONAVILLU- 2K21
Department of Zoology celebrated Onam on 20th August 2021. Sr Aleena Mary of II BSc Zoology welcomed the gathering. Teaching faculty delivered Onam messages followed by various cultural programmes like Onappattu, Thiruvathirakkali, etc. Competitions like Selfie Queen with Pookkalam were conducted. Ms. Anu Johnson of III BSc Zoology and Ms. Riya Bavachan of II BSc Zoology bagged the first prize and second prizes respectively.
Zoonoses Day 2021
Department of Zoology conducted a poster competition in connection with world Zoonoses day observation on 6th July 2021 based on the theme “Let’s Break the Chain of Zoonotic Transmission.” 10 students participated in the programme and Aswathy A S of III B Sc Zoology, Aleena Shaju of III B Sc Zoology, and Ashma Thadevus of II B Voc. and Aiswarya C S of II B Sc Zoology won first, second and third prizes respectively.
Critical Point
The Department of Zoology organized a webinar on 5th June 2021 in connection with World Environmental Day. Dr. Teji K T welcomed the gathering. The Principal, Rev. Dr. Sr. Rosily A V gave an Environmental message based on the focal theme “Reimagine. Recreate. Restore” as tackling climate change and the loss of species is crucial to the restoration of ecosystems. Dr.Abhesh Raghuvaran, Assistant Professor, Centre of Science in Society, CUSAT delivered a talk on ‘At the point of no return’. About 100 students participated in the programme and Ms. Shahla P of III B.Sc Zoology proposed a vote of thanks.
Zoofest
Seven B.Sc students participated in various competitions in the Zoofest of Ernakulam and Kalady zone organized by Zoological Society of Kerala on 26th January 2020. Ms. K. Leena Joseph served as a Judge for the powerpoint presentation competition.
Animal Rights Day
Department of Zoology conducted an Intercollegiate letter-writing competition on the Topic ‘Letter to animal victims of human tyranny’ in connection with the International Animal Rights Day Observation on 10th December 2020. Tania Mariya John of Morning Star Home Science College Angamaly, Nandana Madhusoodanan of Sree Sankara College, Kalady and Angel G Oswin of Morning Star Home Science College Angamaly. 10 students from various colleges participated in the competition. This programme was organized with a view to remembering the animal victims of human tyranny and calling for the recognition of the Universal Declaration of Animal Rights (UDAR).
Jaguar Day
Department of Zoology conducted an e-poster competition on the topic ‘Jaguars-Icons for sustainability’ in connection with International Jaguar Day on 29th November 2020. Angel G Oswin of I B.Sc FCS, Aarya Raj T R of I B.Sc FCS and Ramya R of I B.Sc Chemistry secured first, second and third prizes respectively.
Zoonoses
Department of Zoology organized a Certificate course in ‘Zoonoses’ from 1st September to 30th November 2020 for UG students. 29 students benefited. Various sessions and discussions included Classification, Pathogenesis, mode of transmission and Prevention of major zoonotic diseases, Life cycle, pathology and Control measures of vector-borne diseases. Ms. K. Leena Joseph and Assistant Professor, Morning Star Home Science College and Ms Niranjana Davis, Jubilee Mission Medical College, Thrissur were the resource persons. The relevance and preventive measures of zoonoses with special reference to Coronavirus was emphasized in the present scenario of the COVID-19 outbreak
Environment Day
Department of Zoology observed World Environment Day. The first year M Sc. Students observed their homestead biodiversity and prepared posters on biodiversity of the varied species in their courtyards and identifying the diverse species in their premises. The venture was interesting, educational and inspired the research inclinations in the students.
Green Initiative
The department of M.Sc Zoology started green practice in the campus. The aim of the initiative is to fill the campus with indoor plants and make even the indoors ecofriendly. Plants will be brought by the students and supplied all over the campus eventually. To begin with the M.Sc Zoology lab, classrooms and department has been decorated with indoor plants. Following this, plants will be supplied to other department staff rooms and classrooms. The benefit is that, these green plants provide continuous fresh oxygen supply and the lush green environment provides stress relief for the staff and students. Also it provides a soothing view to the eyes.
