Department Of Economics

The Department of Economics started functioning with the introduction of Pre-Degree course in 1981. B.A. in Economics was introduced in the year 1995 with Sociology and History as subsidiary subjects.

Economics Association regularly conducts seminars, workshops and quiz programmes.The department has a well-equipped library with adequate number of books. The department organizes many programmes of social importance. National and Inter-national seminars, workshops, poster exhibitions, quiz and meetings with parents mark the department's calendar. Social exposure programmes include visits to old age homes, hospitals, orphanages and homes for the destitute which equip the students for a healthy community life. The department publishes a manuscript magazine every year. The Department offers Human Resource Development (HRD) Club.

Freshers Day

Departmental freshers’ day 2016 was held under the auspices of Economics Association.Dr.Laisa Thomas, Head of the department delivered a message to the newcomers. This was followed by refreshments and games.

Inauguration of Economics Association

The department activities started with the inauguration of Economics Association on August 19, 2016 following the re-opening of the College. The Association was inaugurated by Dr.Tomy Varghese, Former HOD, Department of Economics, U C College, Aluva and Dean, Bharathmatha College, Choondy, Aluva.

Celebration of St.Alphonsa Day

St.Alphonsa Day was commemorated in the college under the initiative of the department.

Reading Day

The students of the department took active part in the Reading Day celebration 2016 by presenting posters related to the day. M.s.Abhi Ananthan, III B.A.Economics bagged first prize in the poster competition.

AICUF activities for the academic year 2016-17 was officially inaugurated on September 1 by Dr.Thresiakutty K.M. former AICUF Advisor and Head of the department of Economics, Morning Star Home Science College, Angamaly

Alumni Day

Alumni Day 2016 was held on August 13, 2016. Students from older batches cherished their college days during the event.

PTA Meeting

The departmental PTA meeting was held on November 2016. Parents of all the students were present for the same.

International Seminar On Women Entrepreneurship By Ms.Sujitha Sekharan

The department organized an international seminar for the students on the topic “Women Entrepreneurship” on 14th December 2016. Ms. Sujitha Sekharan, Programme Operations Manager at UNDP, Somalia delivered the talk.

Lecture Series

Dr.Tomy Varghese, Former HOD, Department of Economics, U C College, Aluva and Dean, Bharathmatha College, Choondy, Aluva served as the resource person for this year’s lecture as part of the Morning Star Lecture Series, held on 19th August 2016 . He delivered a talk on ‘Commercial Policy’ . The session was followed by a question-answer session.

Extension Programme at Adopted Anganawady, Champanoor-Yoga and Wellness

An awareness class on Yoga and Wellness was organized to mothers of Anganawadi students on 20th December 2016. The session was lead by Ms.Pauline Joseph K., HOD of Physical Education Department,Morning Star Home Science College, Angamaly. This Anganawady at Champanoor is adopted by the department for extension programmes.

Extension Programme at Adopted Anganawady, Champanoor-Talk on Effective Parenting and Counseling Session

A class on Effective Parenting and a Counseling Session was arranged for the mothers of the adopted Anganawady at Champanoor on January 16 ,2017. Dr.Thresiakutty K.M., Family Counselor, St.Jude Family Counseling Centre, Angamaly & former Head of the department of Economics Morning Star College, served as the resource person for the programme.

Extension Programme at Adopted Anganawady, Champanoor -Student Interaction and Teaching at Anganawady, Champanoor

The students of the department served as the resource persons for this event. The kids at Anganawady were taught rhymes and stories by our students. The programme was arranged on 17 January 2017

Extension Programme at Adopted Anganawady, Champanoor-Donation of Learning Materials,Toys and Eating Plates, and Glasses

The department donated chairs,plates, glasses,learning materials and toys for the students of the adopted Anganawady on 18 January 2017. Sri.Somasekharan , Ward Member, Nedumbassery Grama Panchayat received the donations on behalf of the Panchayat.

Union Budget 2017-2018 Analysis

The association organized a session on Union Budget analysis on 7 February 2017. Dr.Kochuranu Thomas, eminent Economist and Head, department of Economics, Bharat Matha College, Trikkakara served as the resource person. A thorough analysis into the budget gave a new insight to the students on the various aspects of the budget.

Extension Programme -Donation of Dress Materials

Two faculty members and the final year students paid a visit to Abhayabhavan , Koovapady and donated dress materials for the inmates, which was collected as part of the departmental initiative – Dress Bank .Students also spent some memorable moments with the inmates , a total of nearly four hundred, singing and dancing with them. The programmes was held on 7 February 2017.

Extension Programme- Donatoin of Notice Board to Nedumbassery Panchayat

The department of Economics donated a Public Notice Board to Nedumbassery Grama Panchayat on 9 February 2017 ,as part of extension activities. Dr.Laisa thomas, Head of the department handed over the board to Mr.P.C.Somasekharan, Vice President, Nedumbassery Grama Panchayat .
