Department Of Home Science

B. Sc. Home Science (later renamed as Family and Community Science) was the first degree course started in the college in 1968 ,with Chemistry and Zoology as subsidiaries. The course deals with the management and economics of home and community. The subject includes food, nutrition, psysiology, microbiology and health, personal finance, family resource management and planning, ergonomics, textiles science, fashion designing, housing and hospitality management, consumerism, household management, interior decoration, human development and family studies, psychology, mass communication nad journalism, extention education etc. In the 2000 M.Sc. in Family and Community Science was started. A one year Certifiacte Course in Fashion Designing for the B.Sc. students is also offered. The department offers a Certificate Course in Home Science for outside women.

The department has well furnished and well equipped Food and Nutrition Lab, Biochemistry Lab, Textile and Clothing Lab, Observation Lab, Dietary Counselling Center and Residence for Cottage Stay.

Seminars and Lectures

Grahadarshan-an endowment programme started in 1992 to commemorate the services of Sr. Loyola, former Principal - a training programme offered to selected students from M.G. University.

  • Scholarship Prize instituted in the name of Rev. Sr. Ascensa, former Professor of Home Science to the II year B.Sc. student.
  • Mathew Vachaparambil Memorial Prize awarded by Mrs. Annamma MathewVachaparambil to a student in the III year B.Sc. who secures the highest marks in Home Science in the II year University Examination.

Anugrahasadhan

II year B.Sc. students of Home Science Department visited the palliative care unit Anugrahasadhan in Koodapuzha, Chalakudy on 3rd August 2018. Ms. Megha Thampy, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Home Science and Ms. Leena Joseph, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Zoology accompanied the students.


Creative Kitchen

Department of Home Science in association with Nestle conducted a recipe contest, Creative Kitchen for the students of Morning Star Home Science College on 14th August 2018.


Nutrition week celebration

As part of the Nutrition week celebration, a PowerPoint presentation competition on the topic was Go further with Food was conducted for the students of Home Science Department on 7th September 2018


Chicken Recipe Contest

Department of Home Science in association with Kitchen Treasures, a leading brand of spices conducted a chicken recipe contest for the students of Morning Star Home Science College on 14th June 2018. 54 students from various departments participated in the contest


National Seminar

The postgraduate students of Home Science department participated in the seminar organized by the Dietary Department of General Hospital, Ernakulam in collaboration with State Iodine Deficiency Disorder Control Cell, Trivandrum as part of Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) Prevention Day on 25th and 26th October 2018 at General Hospital, Ernakulam. The resource person was Dr. Elizabeth Augustine from Women and Care Hospital, Ernakulam


Teachers Day

Teacher’s day was celebrated by staff and students. On 5th September students had posted beautiful messages on notice board. In addition to that students gave flowers to teachers and offered wishes


National Nutrition Week Celebration

As part of National Nutrition Week celebration, Students of Home Science conducted an exhibition NUTRIEXPO for the college students on 7th September in the Nazareth block to aware the people about the importance of health and well being.


Pulses - The Protein Food (A Science Popularization Programme)

As part of International Year of Pulses, organised by Research Institute, Rajagiri college of Social Sciences, Kalamassery, Kochi and Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, Govt. of Kerala,Ms.MeghaThampy had been invited as Resource Person for a seminar on PULSES THE PROTEIN FOOD at St. Sebastians’ High School, Kanjoor, Ernakulam on 28th September 2016.


Extension class Nutrition for Pre-Schoolers

An extension class was handled by Ms. SajithaSuseelan. S on the developmental aspects of preschoolers. The class was organized by Kerala State Social welfare board on the 6th October 2016 forenoon, for training RGN Creche workers at St. Jude Family Counselling Centre, Angamaly. There were 80 participants. As part of RGN Creche workers’ training programme, an extension class on Childhood problems was taken by Ms.Rajani Devi T.R at St.JudeCouncellingcentre as a part of RGN Creche workers training programmes organized by State social welfare board Thiruvananthapuram on 7.10.2016.


Study Tour

The M.Sc. Students were taken for one day study tour to Different areas at Kochi on 18th October 2016. The students first visited Jewish synagogue at Mattanchery. Later on they visited Police Museum which revealed the history of police force from pre-independence to post independence period.


World Food Day Celebrations

As part of World Food Day Celebrations, Second year PG students of Family and Community Science conducted an awareness class on Nutrition of Pre-schoolers for Anganwadi mothers and workers at Cheriavappalasseryanganwadi on 24th October 2016.


Visit to morning star play school

As part of the curriculum, the first year post graduate students visited Morning Star Play School, Angamaly on 11th October 2018.


Bridge Course

The bridge course for the first year B.Sc. Home Science students was conducted by Dr. Lizmitha Godwin, HOD, Department of Home Science on 4th October 2018


Certificate Course in Home Science

As an extension, Dept. of home Science is conducting a four months certificate course in Home Science for women. The classes started on 15th November. It was officially inaugurated on 25th November with a cake mixing ceremony, as a preparation for Christmas.Rev. Sr.Pushpa, education counsellor inaugurated the function. The course include Stitching, Embroidery, Craft, Beauty tips and Cooking classes which contain north Indian and South Indian Cuisines, Chinese, Continental, Desserts, Salads and Vegetable carving, different types of starters and soups, preserved items etc.


Fresher's Day

First year students of Home Science Department were given welcome on 18th July 2018.Dr. Lizmitha Godwin, HOD of Home Science Department presided over the function. The first year students introduced themselves. Entertainment programmes were conducted by II and III B.Sc. students. Competitions and games were conducted for the first year students.


Fashion show

A fashion show was organized as a part of the Talents’ day program in the college auditorium on 24th July 2017 from 12.30 pm to 1.00 pm. The students of II M.Sc Community and Family Science presented their creations in the fashion show.


Jack fruit cookery class

On 29thJuly 2017, a cookery class on Jack fruit was conducted in the cooking lab of Nazareth Block. Mrs. Ancy Mathew from Pala was the resource person. Final and Second year degree students were the beneficiaries of the programme. Ms. Ancy Mathew delivered a speech on various products of jackfruit and its nutritional benefits. She also demonstrated about ten various recipes of products with jack fruit.


Breast feeding week celebrations

As part of Breast feeding week celebration, an interdepartmental Poster competition on the topic ‘Importance of breast feeding’ was conducted on 8th August 2018.


Lecture Series

As part of lecture series, an awareness class on Silk and Silk mark products was conducted for the final year B.Sc. and M.Sc. students of Home Science Department and for the open course students of Zoology Department on 6th September 2018. The class was taken by Mr. Johny, Technical Assisstant of Weaving and Spinning, Central Silk Board, Palakkad


Poster Competition

A poster competition was conducted for the college students on 2ndAugust 2017, aspart of breast feeding week celebrations. 20 students participated in thecompetition. Posters which were really informative and colourfulwere displayed in the Nazareth Block. Prizes were distributed to the winners.


Galactogogue cuisine Competition

A galactogogue cuisine competition was arranged for the students on 7th August 2017, aspart of breast feeding week celebrations. About 20 students participated in the competition. Two snacks in ready to eat form were prepared by the participants. The items were displayed in the Nutrition Lab.


Association Inauguration

Inauguration of the Association activities of Department of Home Science for the academic year 2017-2018 was conductedon 25th August 2017. Mrs. FencyJoby, one of the alumnae of Home Science Department inaugurated the function. She is now a well-known business entrepreneur and she delivered a very inspiring speech about her business achievements.


Alumni association

Alumnae of Home Science Department gathered in the Nazareth Block after the general meeting held on 11th August 2018 at Mother Teresitta Hall.


Onam celebrations

Onam celebrations were conducted in the college on 30th August 2017. The students of Home Science Department participated in various competitions like Onappattu, Thiruvathira, Athapookkalam, Malayalemanka etc. Payasam was distributed to students in the department.


LIKHA - A platform for entrepreneurs

To improve the entrepreneurial skills among the students in Morning Star Home Science College, the Department of Home Science started an extension centre ‘LIKHA’, which was inaugurated by the college Principal, Rev. Sr. Dr. Rosliy. A. V. on 25th January 2019. As part of Likha, few alumni of the college conducted a sale on handicraft items on 1st February 2019 in the college auditorium. A mehandi tattooing sale was also conducted by II M.Sc. students on 1st and 2nd of February 2019.


Research Centre

Research centre of Home Science Department was inaugurated by Major Archbishop His Eminence Cardinal George Alencherry on 20th July 2018 in the glorious occasion of Golden Jubilee Finale Celebration of Morning Star Home Science College.


Inauguration Of Ph.D Course

The PhD course of Home Science was inaugurated by Dr.Sajimol Agustin, Principal, St. Teresa’s College on 1st January 2019 in the college auditorium.


Felicitation Ceremony

The winners of the National Powerlifting Championship, Ms. Vandana Shaji (Silver medalist) and Ms. Babitha M. Babu (8th position) was felicitated in the department on 3rd October 2018


Flash Mob

A flash mob based on the theme ‘Iodine Deficiency’ was performed by the post graduate students on 26th October 2018 at General Hospital, Ernakulam


Pakal Veedu

As part of the observation of World Diabetic Day, Ist M.Sc. Home Science students visited Pakal veedu in Angamaly on 14th November 2018. The students took awareness classes on lifestyle diseases and also conducted diet counseling for the inmates in the pakal veedu. A recipe contest was also conducted for the students of Home Science Department.


Grand Cooking Contest

Three students of I M.Sc. and 3 students of III B.Sc. participated in the grand cooking contest ‘Our state our taste’ conducted by The Hindu group for finding the Master Chef of Kerala on 25th November 2018 at Oberon Mall, Kochi.
