B. Sc. Home Science (later renamed as Family and Community Science) was the first degree course started in the college in 1968 ,with Chemistry and Zoology as subsidiaries. The course deals with the management and economics of home and community. The subject includes food, nutrition, psysiology, microbiology and health, personal finance, family resource management and planning, ergonomics, textiles science, fashion designing, housing and hospitality management, consumerism, household management, interior decoration, human development and family studies, psychology, mass communication nad journalism, extention education etc. In the 2000 M.Sc. in Family and Community Science was started. A one year Certifiacte Course in Fashion Designing for the B.Sc. students is also offered. The department offers a Certificate Course in Home Science for outside women.
The department has well furnished and well equipped Food and Nutrition Lab, Biochemistry Lab, Textile and Clothing Lab, Observation Lab, Dietary Counselling Center and Residence for Cottage Stay.

As part of the world Environment Day on 5th June, the students of the Department of Home Science celebrated the day on 6th Monday June. It was conducted to raise global awareness to take positive environmental action to protect nature and the plant on earth. The theme of the program was named “HarithamJeevanam”.
The students of Home Science department conducted a handicrafts exhibition as part of the “World Handicraft day”, Celebrated on 10th June. The exhibition was inaugurated by Mrs.SeenaAsstProfessor,Department of Chemistry, SreeShankara College, Kalady.
The delegates from Israel visited the campus on 22nd July 2016 at 10.00 am.They were offered welcome by Faculty members, principal and students. The students demonstrated yoga, group song and dance. They were entertained with variety of activities. There was an interaction programme, in which the students asked questions regarding culture and lifestyle of Israel.
A lecture by Ms.Megha Thampy, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Home Science, Morning Star Home Science College, Angamaly was given at a GramaSabha of 7thWard ofNedumbasseryPanchayat on 27thJuly, 2016 at Vappalassery at 3.00 pm. A class on energy management was conducted by Rajani Devi.T.R to the members of ward VIII at SaraswathiVidhyapeetam, Railway Colony at 4.00 pm on 31st July 2016.
The department of Home Science organised a two day UGC sponsored national seminar on the topic “Food Safety and Quality Assurance-A Comprehensive Perpetual Perspective”. It was organized on the 11th and 12th of August, 2016.
On 1st September 2016, The Department of Home Science organised a lecture series for the students. Dr Leena Leon, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Home Science, St.Teresa’s College delivered a lecture on the topic Nutrition in the present scenario.
Teacher’s day was celebrated by staff and students. On 5th September students had posted beautiful messages on notice board. In addition to that students gave flowers to teachers and offered wishes
As part of National Nutrition Week celebration, Students of Home Science conducted an exhibition ‘NutriExpo’for the college students on 7th September in the Nazreth block to aware the people about the importance of health and well being.
As part of International Year of Pulses, organised by Research Institute, Rajagiri college of Social Sciences, Kalamassery, Kochi and Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, Govt. of Kerala,Ms.MeghaThampy had been invited as Resource Person for a seminar on’ Pulses –The Protein Food’ at St. Sebastians’ High School, Kanjoor, Ernakulam on 28th September 2016.
An extension class was handled by Ms. SajithaSuseelan. S on the developmental aspects of preschoolers. The class was organized by Kerala State Social welfare board on the 6th October 2016 forenoon, for training RGN Creche workers at St. Jude Family Counselling Centre, Angamaly. There were 80 participants. As part of RGN Creche workers’ training programme, an extension class on Childhood problems was taken by Ms.Rajani Devi T.R at St.JudeCouncellingcentre as a part of RGN Creche workers training programmes organized by State social welfare board Thiruvananthapuram on 7.10.2016.
The M.Sc. Students were taken for one day study tour to Different areas at Kochi on 18th October 2016. The students first visited Jewish synagogue at Mattanchery. Later on they visited Police Museum which revealed the history of police force from pre-independence to post independence period.
As part of World Food Day Celebrations, Second year PG students of Family and Community Science conducted an awareness class on Nutrition of Pre-schoolers for Anganwadi mothers and workers at Cheriavappalasseryanganwadi on 24th October 2016.
A two day Kids Fest was organised by the department of Home Science in association with Indian Trade Fair Foundation on the 9th and 10th December 2016. The programme was conducted with the effort of students. The event was inaugurated by Ms.Mini Eldho Chairperson of Nedumbassery Gram Panchayath by lighting the lamp at 10 am.
As part of an our departmental extension activity programme the faculty arranged a session for the B.Ed students of SreeSankara collegeKalady on 13th December,2016 at 12.pm. We received them with great pleasure. Mrs Sherin Abraham interacted with students and also shared some valuable information focusing on some daily tips for a better life in a day, and Ist PG students demonstrated some simple recipes for them.
As an extension, Dept. of home Science is conducting a four months certificate course in Home Science for women. The classes started on 15th November. It was officially inaugurated on 25th November with a cake mixing ceremony, as a preparation for Christmas.Rev. Sr.Pushpa, education counsellor inaugurated the function. The course include Stitching, Embroidery, Craft, Beauty tips and Cooking classes which contain north Indian and South Indian Cuisines, Chinese, Continental, Desserts, Salads and Vegetable carving, different types of starters and soups, preserved items etc.
First year students of Home Science Department were given welcome on 7th July 2017.Dr. Lizmitha Godwin, HOD of Home Science Department presided over the function. The first year students introduced themselves. Entertainment programmes were conducted by II and III B.Sc. students. Competitions and games were conducted for the first year students.
A fashion show was organized as a part of the Talents’ day program in the college auditorium on 24th July 2017 from 12.30 pm to 1.00 pm. The students of II M.Sc Community and Family Science presented their creations in the fashion show.
An exhibition cum sale of jute products was conducted in the college on 24th July 2017 by Ms. Sabitha Hassan. She is an upcoming entrepreneur in the field of manufacturing eco-friendly handmade products such as bags, wallets, pouches, file etc. in the brand name ‘Udhaara’.
On 29thJuly 2017, a cookery class on Jack fruit was conducted in the cooking lab of Nazareth Block. Mrs. Ancy Mathew from Pala was the resource person. Final and Second year degree students were the beneficiaries of the programme. Ms. Ancy Mathew delivered a speech on various products of jackfruit and its nutritional benefits. She also demonstrated about ten various recipes of products with jack fruit.
As part of Breast Feeding Week Celebrations, Dept. of Home Science organized various programs and competitions for the students of the college during the first week of August.
A lecture series was arranged for the final year students of the college on the topic‘Importance of breast feeding week’ on 1stAugust 2017. Dr. Elizabeth Jacob, Gynaecologist,Little Flower Hospital, Angamaly was the resource person.
A poster competition was conducted for the college students on 2ndAugust 2017, aspart of breast feeding week celebrations. 20 students participated in thecompetition. Posters which were really informative and colourfulwere displayed in the Nazareth Block. Prizes were distributed to the winners.
A galactogogue cuisine competition was arranged for the students on 7th August 2017, aspart of breast feeding week celebrations. About 20 students participated in the competition. Two snacks in ready to eat form were prepared by the participants. The items were displayed in the Nutrition Lab.
Inauguration of the Association activities of Department of Home Science for the academic year 2017-2018 was conductedon 25th August 2017. Mrs. FencyJoby, one of the alumnae of Home Science Department inaugurated the function. She is now a well-known business entrepreneur and she delivered a very inspiring speech about her business achievements.
Alumimi meet was conducted in the collage on 12th August 2017 at Mother Teresitta Hall. Principal, Dr. Sr. Rosilin A.V inaugurated the function. Alumnae of Home Science Department gathered in the Nazareth Block after the general meeting. They had a get together and few games were conducted for them. Prizes were distributed for the winners in the game.
Onam celebrations were conducted in the college on 30th August 2017. The students of Home Science Department participated in various competitions like Onappattu, Thiruvathira, Athapookkalam, Malayalemanka etc. Payasam was distributed to students in the department.
